Gen. AI- Material Exploration

My love for storytelling started at a young age, when generative AI came out last year to the public I couldn’t stop asking myself “How can I harness this tool to become a better storyteller and designer?” And this is where my passions for materials, nature, storytelling and design fused together and sparked this exploration.

This work will be displayed at IDEO’s SF office in our AI section.

What This Is:

By using generative AI, we could visually explore the design of innovative materials not yet in existence. Why be limited by the materials we know exist today? What would happen if we could design the materials we’d like to see, how could this help us change the story and narrative the products are trying to say? How can we take something that’s 2D and go into 3D, and lastly how could we go from 3D to mass manufacturable? These are some of the questions that lead us to some of these images above.

Imagine the possibility of creating coral reef restoration bricks from repurposed bleached coral, reinforced with bioplastic. These bricks could provide vital habitats for marine life, aiding in the regrowth of coral and other aquatic plants, and simultaneously addressing the critical issue of coral reef degradation. Similarly, envisioning a fabric for a shoe inspired from the pattern of mixing seaweed and moss together could underline the urgency of protecting our natural ecosystems. Another innovative concept could be a table that mimics the appearance of granite but is actually a sustainable blend of paper pulp and cotton, combining aesthetic appeal with ecological responsibility. These concepts demonstrate how AI-guided design could lead to groundbreaking and environmentally friendly material innovations.

What material will you dream up and create?

Each of these spheres was created using MidJourney, reimagining new materials, textures, properties, and unlikely material combinations. The goal was to craft a compelling story that retains the aesthetics of materials that are not yet in existence.

Above is an AI generated image I made using MidJourney, it’s of coral reef restoration bricks made from repurposed bleached coral, reinforced with bioplastic, provides vital habitats for marine life, aids in coral and aquatic plant regrowth, and addresses the critical issue of coral reef degradation.
